Continuing the 100-year tradition of Catholic storytelling in the Inland Northwest
In 1919 the first issue of the Inland Empire Catholic Messenger was published in the Diocese of Spokane under the leadership of Spokane’s first bishop, Most Rev. Augustin Schinner. Long before digital media, bishops used print media like the IECM to communicate to the Catholic people of the region. The IECM was a small booklet mailed to Catholic households across eastern Washington state. It featured diocesan news, statements from the bishop, stories, advertisements and commentary on Catholic religiosity and practice.

In 1942, the IECM evolved into The Inland Catholic, the region's first Catholic newspaper. About a decade later in 1955, the newspaper continued under a new name: Inland Register and offered syndicated national and international Catholic stories provided by the Denver Catholic Register system. The Inland Register became a household name among Catholics in Eastern Washington for almost 50 years.
After the dawn of the digital era, readership trends began shifting online, and newspapers became challenging to sustain. In light of this, the Inland Register produced its last stories on newsprint in August 2016. By Advent of the same year, a new publication was announced: Inland Catholic, a bi-monthly magazine that featured local and syndicated stories and essays.
In continuation of this long-standing Catholic storytelling tradition, Inland Catholic continues to inform and evangelize the people of the Inland Northwest about Jesus Christ, His Church and the Gospel. Inland Catholic magazine now prints quarterly around the liturgical calendar, features more pages and exclusively features local stories by local writers. Inland Catholic online (this website) features more updates, PR and small news stories from the Bishop and around the diocese.
