Bishop: First anniversary of Expo’23

First anniversary of Expo’23

Dear faithful of eastern Washington,

As many of you know, the Church in our country is currently amidst a multi-year National Eucharistic Revival. One year ago today, as a local initiative of this Revival, thousands of us gathered as a diocese in the heart of Spokane to worship Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It was with great joy as your bishop, that I could pray alongside you all in the procession and kneel before our Lord in adoration together at Eucharistic Exposition 2023 (Expo’23).

I was blessed to join our diocesan group of priests, religious and laity at the National Eucharistic Congress just a few months ago. Over 50,000 pilgrims from across the country packed into Lucas Oil Stadium for Eucharistic adoration, Holy Mass and numerous keynote addresses. Throughout the week, I discovered a palpable joy in myself and nearly all of those in attendance. It was clear why we were all gathered there, and it was clear the joy was coming from Jesus’ presence with us in the Eucharist.

Much has changed in our country, our church and the hearts of the faithful since the beginning of the pandemic and my 2020 pastoral letter, The Most Holy Eucharist. Yet, this joy has stayed with me since the National Eucharistic Congress and has inspired me to expand on my previous pastoral letter by reflecting on Eucharistic joy. I plan to share this with you all on October 12, 2024, the commemoration of Blessed Carlo Acutis, the patron of the National Eucharistic Revival.

Live Jesus in our hearts, Forever!
